UTP Amonsh Nag (28) of Kesinga in Kalahandi, housed in Sambalpur Circle jail, who allegedly attempted to end life by self-immolation, has claimed that some inmates tried to kill him.
The incident had occurred on Friday. Nag was rushed to VSS Medical with 90 per cent burn injuries. Jail authorities said he had set himself afire after dousing in kerosene.
The UTP, however, in his statement to Magistrate Anjulina Pradhan has said he never tried to commit suicide and two inmates forcibly sprinkled some liquid and set him afire.
Though he did not name any of the inmates, he hinted at the role of family members of a girl he loved in the past.
Amonsh Nag has been lodged in the Circle jail since March 25 after being arrested by Khetrajpur Police on charges of rape. While the District Collector is on leave, it is learnt Additional District Magistrate M C Bariha and SP Nikhil Kanodia will undertake a joint inquiry and submit a report to the State Government.
