Vehicular traffic on Bargarh-Balangir route was totally disrupted for hours on Tuesday following agitation by people at Barpali town over mysterious death of a college girl of the locality. Keeping the body of the girl on the road, people demanded proper compensation to the deceased’s family and action against the accused involved in the incident that caused the death. Armed police were deployed in the town to prevent any untoward incident. Train services were also affected as Balangir-Bhubaneswar intercity train was delayed for four hours. Shops downed their shutters and markets shut in view of the tense situation.
Sources said the body of college girl, studying Plus Three first year Arts in Larambha college of Bargarh district, was recovered near Barpali railway station on Monday in a mysterious condition. Since the place comes under railway, GRP registered an UD case and handed over the body to her family after conducting autopsy on Tuesday. Her family members have alleged that she was murdered.
The deceased, identified as Subarna Patel, was a native of Kumbari village, five km from Barpali town. She had come to her village and went back to the college hostel on Sunday. “She came to village and returned to her college by bus. She was definitely brought by someone who killed her and threw the body near railway station,” alleged deceased’s father Hemanta Patel.
However, police recovered a poison bottle from near the body. There were also injury marks on her neck. Police said they are waiting for the medical report to ascertain the exact cause of her death. “We have started already investigation,” an officer of GRP said.
Meanwhile, people lifted the blockade after authorities assured them to take action in the case in 72 hours. Rs 10,000 was issued from district Red Cross Fund for the family of the deceased.
