Hundreds of the people in Kandhamal and Gajapati districts were affected following flash floods triggered by incessant rain for the last three days.
Around 200 families of Tumudibandh have been housed in two makeshift camps by the Kandhamal district administration, when the water of Turi Nallha entered their houses. Cooked food was being served to around 700 persons taking shelter in the camp set up on the premises of a school since Friday, Kandhamal district collector BS Punia said on Saturday. The people are expected to return to their houses on Sunday as the water has receded in the area, sources said.
The road communication between Tumudiband and Kotagarh, Kotagarh and Srirampur in Kandhamal district was disrupted as the two under construction culverts washed away in the rain water. The district administration however asked the public works engineer to restore communication with repairing the roads.
Engineers of the public works department are in the filed to repair the roads. Since there was no heavy rain from Saturday morning, we expected the road communication will be restored very soon, said an engineer.
Meanwhile, Hirakud dam authorities have opened another 10 gates on Saturday to discharge flood water from the reservoir following heavy rain in Chhattisgarh. “Since there is heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh, we are anticipating an increase in the inflow on Sunday. So to keep the room for the flood water in the reservoir so we have opened a total 19 gates on Saturday”, the executive engineer of Hirakud Dam Project RK Panda said.
