A joint team of Bargarh district volunteer force and CRPF arrested a Maoist during a combing operation in Arhwal reserve forest range on Wednesday. He has been identified as Sanatan Deep (30).
Police claimed he was involved in a series of offensives in Paikmal police station area in the past few months. A local court remanded him in judicial custody.
Interestingly, Sanatan is the younger brother of home guard Kishore Deep, who recently resigned after serving for more than 12 years at the Paikmal police station. He cited insecurity for putting in his papers.
“Sanatan and his associates were wanted in various cases, including murder of home guard Narayan Suna and contractor Itter Muhammad Khan. Deep was also involved in torching vehicles and liquor joints. He was extorting money from the locals and recruiting local youths in the rebel ranks,” Bargarh SP Anup Krisha said.
The SP said the rebel admitted to his involvement in the killing of Suna, as he was opposing extortion in his area. “During interrogation, police got valuable information regarding the Red rebels’ plans and about locals who are providing inputs to the extremists in Paikmal, Padampur and Jharbandh police station areas,” the SP added.
