Two persons were killed and one critically injured when a train rammed into their four-wheeler at unmanned railway crossing on the outskirts of Khemesara village here on Saturday.
The deceased are secretary of Narayan Service Co-operative Society at Satlama, Santanu Bisi (50) and Co-operative extension officer of Bargarh Central Co-operative Bank, Durlaba Pradhan (55). The injured driver of the four-wheeler Ganesh Khamari has been admitted to Barpali community health centre.
The three had gone to Khemesara, about five km from Barpali, to review a godown for stocking of paddy by the co-operative society. On their way back while they were crossing the unmanned railway crossing, the Howrah-Jagdalpur Samaleswari Express rammed into the vehicle dragging it on the tracks for about 100 metres.
Villagers rushed to the spot and retrieved the three trapped in the vehicle. While Bisi died on the spot, Pradhan succumbed at the VSS Medical where he was admitted soon after the mishap.
Following the accident, villagers demanded upgradation of the unmanned level crossing. The angry locals also resorted to stone pelting in which, a Railway Police Force (RPF) constable Karunakar Sahu was injured.
