A notorious criminal was shot dead in a shootout with the police on the outskirts of Sambalpur city on Thursday 2nd October 2014.
The history-sheeter, identified as Raju Saha, was killed in an exchange of fire near Dengasaragi village under the Ainthapalli police station, Sambalpur SP Akhileswar Singh said.
After getting information that some criminals were hiding at Dengsaragi, the police raided the village.The deceased criminal Raju, who first opened fire at the police during the raid, was grievously hurt in the return fire by the police and succumbed to his injuries on the way to the VSS Medical College Hospital at Burla.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of Ainthapalli police station Dhabaleswar Sahoo was hit by a bullet in his leg during the shootout.Raju was a known criminal with several criminal cases, including that of gunrunning pending against him. A few days ago, he was caught by the police for possession of illegal firearms, sources in the police said.
